White Noise, Brown Noise, and What to Actually Play

If you have ever gone looking for something to sleep to, you have run into the colours. White noise, pink noise, brown noise, and a hundred videos promising that one of them is the answer.

They are not marketing inventions. They describe genuinely different things, and the differences matter more than most people realise once you are listening for seven hours at a stretch.

What the colours actually mean

The colour describes how sound energy is spread across frequencies.

White noise

Equal energy at every frequency. Because of how human hearing works, that comes out sounding bright and hissy, like an untuned radio or a TV with no signal. It is the most common option and, for a lot of people, the least comfortable one to sleep to. All that high-frequency content can feel sharp after a while.

Pink noise

Energy drops as frequency rises, which pulls the balance down out of the hiss. Steady rain is close to pink noise. Most people find it noticeably easier to listen to than white, and it is the one to try first if white noise feels harsh.

Brown noise

Energy drops faster still, so the low end dominates. It sounds like a distant waterfall, heavy rain on a roof, or the rumble of a plane cabin. Brown noise had a moment online for good reason. If you find white noise irritating, this is usually the one that clicks.

There is no correct answer here, and there is no evidence that one colour is universally better for sleep. It is genuinely a preference. The useful move is to try pink and brown before concluding that noise does not work for you, because most people only ever try white.

The part almost nobody explains

Here is the thing worth understanding, because it changes how you use it.

Sound at night does not wake you because it is loud. It wakes you because it is different from what came before it.

A silent room has a very low noise floor. Against that silence, a car door at 3am is an enormous jump. Your brain is built to notice exactly that kind of change, and in the second half of the night, when your sleep is at its lightest, it does not take much of a jump to pull you up.

Steady noise does not block anything. What it does is raise the floor, so the gap between background and interruption gets much smaller. The car door still happens. It just no longer stands out against nothing.

That reframing has a practical consequence: consistency matters more than volume. A quiet, unchanging sound does the job better than a loud, varying one, because the variation is the very thing you are trying to smooth out.

What to actually play

Avoid anything with structure

Lyrics, melody, a presenter's voice, or big swings between quiet and loud all pull attention. Podcasts are a popular choice and a genuinely poor one for staying asleep, because a story has hooks and the volume jumps around. They are fine for falling asleep and bad for the rest of the night.

Pick something that does not resolve

Rain, a fan, a distant engine, ocean without crashing waves. Anything that just continues. The moment a track ends or a playlist changes, you get a gap, and the gap is a change.

Keep it quiet

Loud enough to soften the room, quiet enough that you could still hold a conversation over it. Seven or eight hours a night is a long exposure and there is no benefit to pushing the level.

Decide about the timer honestly

A sleep timer is right if your problem is falling asleep. If your problem is waking at 3am, a timer switches the masking off hours before the part of the night you actually needed it for. Running it all night is the better call for early-hours wakers.

You do not need a special app for any of this

Worth being blunt, since a lot of sleep hardware is sold on the strength of its companion app. Everything described here is freely available. Spotify, YouTube, Calm, Headspace, Apple Music, or any of the dozens of free noise apps will play pink and brown noise on loop.
